If it has been a few years (or longer) since your last dental appointment, you might be nervous about what to expect. That is completely understandable. Rest assured that your dentist and their support team want you to have a positive care experience. However, you might still wonder if it is painful to get your teeth cleaned. What can you expect during your appointment, and how can you keep discomfort to a minimum? This blog post explains what you should know.

What Does a Professional Teeth Cleaning Feel Like?

If your teeth are healthy, strong, and relatively free of plaque and tartar, a professional cleaning should be a fairly easy experience. You may notice some pressure as your hygienist completes their job, but beyond that, the entire appointment should go smoothly.

However, getting your teeth cleaned may be more challenging if:

  • You have significant buildups of plaque and tartar on your teeth.
  • You have sensitive teeth due to thin tooth enamel.
  • Your gums have receded.
  • You do not floss regularly.

How to Make Teeth Cleanings More Comfortable

If you are worried that it will be uncomfortable to get your teeth cleaned, these tips might help:

  • Level up your oral hygiene routine. If you still have a few weeks before your appointment, now is the ideal time to start brushing twice a day and flossing regularly.
  • Use a desensitizing toothpaste. This can be especially useful if you have thin tooth enamel, or gum recession has exposed the roots of your teeth.
  • Avoid overbrushing. Some people apply too much pressure when they brush their teeth. This can weaken the tooth enamel and make it more sensitive. Gentleness is key! (If you struggle to be gentle, consider switching to an electric toothbrush that will do most of the work for you.)
  • Take a pain reliever before your appointment. A dose of Advil or another over-the-counter pain medication may reduce discomfort during your cleanings.
  • Do not neglect future cleanings. If you visit your dentist regularly, less tartar and plaque will accumulate on your teeth between visits, so cleanings should be easier.

Getting your teeth cleaned should not be painful! Talk to your dentist about any concerns you have so you can have a positive care experience.
