I Want Veneers—Do I Have to Give Up Coffee?

For some people, coffee is just a means to an end, a way to kick into gear as you’re waking up. For others, the process of making it, the aroma as it comes together, and taking that first sip—it’s simply the best part of the day! But despite all of its delicious qualities, coffee is notorious for staining teeth. Does the same apply to dental veneers? Whether you already have them or are considering upgrading your smile, does this treatment mean you need to give up (or significantly cut back on) your favorite boosting brew?

Can You Drink Coffee with Veneers?

Yes, it is perfectly alright to drink coffee (regularly!) with veneers.

While it’s true that coffee can discolor your teeth over time, it’s important to point out that the material used to make veneers, dental-grade porcelain, is stain-resistant. This isn’t the same as stain-proof, but it will take much longer for your veneers to change color compared to your regular teeth following repeated coffee exposure.

You Can Have Both!

So your teeth will stay whiter for longer despite drinking coffee every day, but what can you do to prevent staining altogether? This is mostly possible, and it probably involves habits you’re already familiar with:

  • Brush at least twice a day for two minutes each—once in the morning and again in the evening.
  • When drinking coffee, try to consume it relatively quickly as opposed to sipping it for hours. This minimizes the exposure to your teeth/veneers.
  • Drinking with a straw is a common tip you’ll see online, but it’s not as helpful as it may seem. Coffee may miss initial contact with your teeth, but it will get into your saliva, which means it will still cover your teeth.
  • Rinse your mouth with water after finishing your coffee.
  • Visit your dentist at least twice a year for a professional checkup and cleaning.

Brushing consistently, drinking at a decent pace, and getting cleanings at your dentist all work together to prevent the buildup of pigments that can cause your teeth to discolor. This not only helps your smile stay nice and white, but you’ll also lower your risk for other problems that can impact your health and appearance, namely tooth decay and gum disease.

Drink Up

Whether you’re a black coffee or double caramel swirl with an extra twist of cream type of person, coffee is still on the menu with veneers. By being a little mindful and taking consistent care of your teeth, you can look forward to warm beverages and bright smiles for many years to come.
